Week ending – 28th February, 2020

Oh my goodness, what a crazy week – snow, rain, snow, floods … when will we find some organised weather system?

However, the confusion of the weather has not phased our wonderful LB 1 pupils. Instead, they have worked like little Trojans, proving how resilient they are all becoming; persevering at tasks that have challenged them and talking about their emotions when events have upset them! Well done, LB 1!

Shrove Tuesday arrived in LB1 and the pupils put their creative chef hats on to create new topping ideas for their pancakes. After exploring how the different countries in the British Isles have their pancakes, the pupils were set the challenge of creating a unique topping for Mrs Pitcher, using their fine motor skills to plan, prepare and create their own pancake toppings. Yummy!

Firstly, they visited the ‘Cookery Shop’ to decide what toppings would be best before planning and designing their creation.

Of course, once their creations had been made, we had to give them the opportunity to taste test!

Lesson learning –

Maths this week explored bigger and smaller numbers: proving it, finding more and less and finding the difference.

Yr. 2 have really shone this week in their Numeracy. They were introduced to the new symbol of bigger than > and smaller than  < in the style of crocodile teeth. They rolled 2 dice to find numbers less than 30 before making a comparison. Great group work was observed as they enjoyed proving Mrs Pitcher wrong!

Finally, we have begun our preparations for the SEND Dance Festival, early in April. We spent our Music lesson exploring the song before Miss Troth used her dance expertise to begin creating our performance. Thank you, Miss Troth. Photos and videos to follow as the performance takes shape.

We are bananas about penguins!

This week we have been reading the story ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. ‘Lost and Found’ is about a penguin who feels lonely and so as it is Mental Health Week, we have been talking about the penguins feelings as well as our own. We have also learned lots of fun facts about penguins and Antarctica. Today, for Fun Friday we have made banana penguins, they were peng-tastic!

Cooking our own Gingerbread!

Last thursday, to finish off our week of the gingerbread man story, the children thoroughly enjoyed mixing and rolling and cutting out their own gingerbread men to decorate and take home! We had a little sneaky taste and they were delicious!

Coffee Shop!

Since returning to nursery after the Christmas break, the children have enjoyed making an array of hot drinks in our winter coffee shop! Order your hot chocolate at the window and choose from the delicious selection of cakes to complement your drink! Pay with real pennies and you can even take away or eat in to  carry on working on your laptop!

End of term news

It has been a busy but lovely term in LB2. We have finished our term with two step number problems which we have written and solved. We have also looked at Roman buildings and built one of our own. Each part is labelled. Our theme word of the week was colonnade.

This week has been very busy preparing for Christmas. Here is an example of our cards and calendars. These have been sent home to you today. We have discussed reflection and symmetry, light and dark, shading and colour mixing as we produced our beautiful calendars. Look in the Christmas card stocking for our kennings and guess what they are all about.

We continue to do Word of the Day and will be doing a scavenger hunt tomorrow using words we have learnt.

We will be looking at the BFG by Roald Dahl for the first two weeks after Christmas. Optional homework would be to read or watch the BFG and design what he would have as a menu for his Christmas dinner. Children can either design his menu,  make a model or represent the food in any way they like. They can bring it in in the first week back. Reading should continue over Christmas and maths homework is due in on Monday 6th January

In LB2, we all wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

People That Help Us!

This week, the children have been learning about people who help us, playing ‘vets’ in the role play area and learning how to care for sick animals, building a house as a team, learning body parts and making their own X-Ray skeletons as doctors in the creative area, using toothbrushes to clean the giant teeth and putting out fires in the garden with their water hoses and firefighters hats! Well done to all our helpers this week!

The Romans have landed in LB2 (and Diwali celebrations)

How exciting! Here is our Roman armour which is on loan from the County Museum.

We have also been celebrating Diwali through these amazing concrete poems.

As well as this beautiful Diwali lantern.

Bonfire Night Celebrations!

Remember, remember the 5th of November! The children have really enjoyed learning about and celebrating Bonfire Night this week. They have made sparklers from chocolate fingers, melted chocolate and sprinkles, which were yummy according to some very happy children! Then, as an extra special treat, they have also lit sparklers with Miss Salisbury, Miss Williams and Mrs Lynch!

Maths problems and a little more

We have been finding and using mathematical vocabulary to create these lovely word problems.

We have also created dioramas. I have included a couple of photos of work completed this week which is too good to miss.

IT wizards

Yr. 1 enjoyed the use of the chrome books for the first time, this academic year, today.

They learnt how to log on and explore the different learning apps available to them.

Their knowledge of using the chrome books was amazing. What an extremely technologically minded year group they are!
