2HB Home Learning – Autumn 1

Look at some of the amazing home learning that the children have been bringing into school. We have been learning about the famous Victorian heroine, Grace Darling who rescued passengers from the ship, The Forfarshire, wrecked near her lighthouse home…hence the lighthouses!

Look out for more photographs of our super work coming soon!

2RF Home Learning

Here is some of the amazing home learning 2RF have created this half term, from lighthouses to Victorian outfits via lots of food…

Victorian Engineering

We’ve been learning about a Victorian engineer – French engineer Gustave Eiffel. He helped build the Statue of Liberty but, more famously, he also designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. We then had a go at creating our own towers using the ideas of a wide base and strong triangular shapes…

Leisure in the Lickeys

Year 2 have been discovering how Victorians spent their leisure time by exploring old photographs and discussing similarities and differences. We were very surprised to find out that some of the photographs actually showed the Lickey Hills! We found out how the hills were bought from private ownership and gifted to the City of Birmingham. Victorian Brummies would take the tram out of the city and up into the Lickeys for picnics, walks and bilberry picking.

Tent Materials

Year 2 have been investigating different fabrics to see which were suitable for making a tent. We realised that the fabric had to be waterproof so Year 2 quickly got testing…

Sorting By Materials

Year 2 have started off their materials topic by sorting objects by what they were made from. Metal, wood, plastic, rubber, fabric… all very straightforward until we wondered where to put the scissors which had metal blades but plastic handles!

Fortunately, we came up with the idea of overlapping the sorting hoops and it wasn’t before we spotted other objects were actually made of two or three different materials.

Our very own monster machines!

In Year 2 we have been reading ‘Monster Machine’! It is a lovely book about a Dad who has invented a machine that makes monsters. We have just found out that the monsters are sad and are missing their own world. In DT we have designed and made our own machine that they can travel back to their own world in! We worked fantastically in teams of 3 to make boats, aeroplanes, cannons and more that they can use! Excellent teamwork 2AH.

Andy Goldsworthy inspired Art

We have had such a wonderful afternoon creating our own pieces of art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. Look how well we did…

What Trees do we Have at our School?

The answer is a surprisingly large number of different trees as Year 2 have been discovering. We have collected and identified leaves from trees all around the school, looking closely at the similarities and differences between them, to answer our question.

All four school houses can be found: Ash, Beech, (Horse) Chestnut and Oak (two different types!) as well as Scots Pine, Silver Birch, Alder, Rowan, Lime, Field Maple, Sycamore and many others including a tree that 2AH like to call (Mrs) Hawthorn(e)!
