Do All Metals Conduct?

This morning we were learning about conductors and whether all metals conduct the same. We tested this by getting a metal wire and joining it to a light-bulb.  We then used a strip of paper which had numbers from 1 – 10 and we held it above the bulb to see how bright it was.  We used the pieces of paper to see if the light is brighter or darker. We found that a copper wire was the best metal.

Show and Tell in LB1

Every week in LB1, on a Friday, the children bring in a toy, picture, book or photo from home to share with the  children.  The children love this time, on a  Friday afternoon, where we discuss what they have brought in, why and then ask questions about it.

We have enjoyed show and tell sessions on;-

Holidays, favourite toys, books and autumn.

Spelling Common Exception Words

In Year 1 we have learnt to spell some of our common exception words in different ways.

Which way did you like best?

Junk Model Houses

Today 1KG started to make their junk model houses. We can’t wait to see what they look like when they are finished.

Magnet Magic

Year 1 have been investigating magnets, finding it which materials will stick to a magnet. We were quite surprised to find that not all metals do stick. We also explored how magnets attract to each but can also push away if they are facing the same ends. Finally, we looked at how a magnet could make a paper clip magnetic so that it could then stick to another paper clip. Magic!

Autumn Walk

This week we went on a walk to the field to spot the signs of Autumn, we had lot of fun creating a leaf shower!  We brought different coloured leaves back to nursery and used them in our woodland role play. We have also been busy baking hedgehog bread and it tasted delicous!

Phonics at home

Thank you for your support at the phonics workshop. We hope you found it useful. Please feel free to look at the phonics presentation on the website.

We have enjoyed starting the children off on their reading books and we hope you find the letter that we have sent home with tips for reading useful. We are continuing to practice our letters and sounds using the jolly phonics to become familiar with the phase 2 sounds. Some children are focusing on recognising and orally hearing and saying the sounds in s, a, t, p, i and n; others have been using them to write simple words. Please use this as a guide when exploring the songs or playing games on phonics play or other websites. You may also like to find letters around your home as ‘treasure’ or to make words using magnetic letters.

Will it fold or will it not fold…that is the question!

Question:

Is it possible to fold a square or rectangle in half…so that one half falls exactly on the other half?

We are looking at how to fold squared and rectangular paper to get two exact halves. This is called s_ _ _ _ _ _ y.

Could your child explain what symmetry means? Could they use words or a demonstration to explain it to someone who didn’t know?
