Papier Mache

Year 5 have been doing papier mache. We transformed balloons into planets and then made a display.

Putting our Values in Action

Thank you to everyone who contributed early Christmas gifts for Operation Christmas Child in Zambia. It’s good to see our values of friendship and kindness going beyond our school gates.

YOUNGSTERS from Lickey Hills Primary School have been inspired to help give children less fortunate a better Christmas, thanks to a local visitor.

Rosemary Aveyard who is co-ordinating Barnt Green’s Operation Christmas Child gave a presentation to years one to six during a school assembly.

She talked about her visit to Zambia where she saw the impact the boxes full of toys and gifts had on their recipients and showed them a Powerpoint presentation relating to the scheme.

Year five teacher Sarah Brooks said the children loved Rosemary’s visit and finding out about Operation Christmas Child.

“They were really inspired and now want to do something for the children less fortunate than themselves.

“So hopefully we’ll get lots of boxes.”

Tomorrow between 10am and 4pm at Barnt Green Parish Centre it will be Super Shoe Box Saturday where volunteers will be tasked with packing the gifts into boxes and tea, coffee and cake will be available to raise funds for transporting the boxes.

Last year St Andrew’s Church and St Andrew’s School sent more than 300 boxes between them.

Gifts for the boxes throughout the year but more will be welcome tomorrow.

The Haka – 5CW

For our last unit in PE, 5CW have been learning about the haka – a traditional dance that is performed by the New Zealand Rugby Union team.

We learnt that the New Zealand team use the haka to intimidate their opponents just before the match kicks off. We even looked at some of the translations of the original Maori lyrics to help us create our very own haka!

Finally, we worked hard to perfect the Ka Mate haka and performed it as a class. Mrs Williams and Mrs Ray were both a bit scared as they walked through the hall!

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all pupils in 5CW for their amazing work this year – I’ve been blown away by your fantastic effort and the many outstanding pieces of work you have produced. You have been a pleasure to teach and I am looking forward to teaching you again at some point in Year 6!

Nature In Art Museum

Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic day out on Tuesday visiting the Nature In Art museum in Gloucestershire. The weather was amazing too! The children enjoyed a variety of activities including pond dipping and making a dragonfly out of wire. We learned a lot of information about pondlife and it was extremely interesting to be able to see the living things we caught underneath the magnifying glasses. It was also a great opportunity to chat to the resident artist who specialised in textiles. She showed us how she used her sewing machine to create different sorts of lines and she also sewed some of our names onto fabric. Everybody enjoyed our day and learned something new! Well done Year 5!

Big Sing

Today all of Year 5 visited Worcester University Arena to attend the ‘Big Sing’. We enjoyed singing our songs that we have been practising for the last few weeks and we also learned some new ones. It was great fun singing with nearly 1500 children and to a live band!

Please enjoy this extract of us singing!

Bhangra Dance!

Well done to all of you who took part this afternoon. You made us very proud and I think the whole audience really enjoyed your dance.

Animals that live in the rainforest

Today we have been learning all about the rainforest and the animals that live within. Everyone has been making a poster of an animal that lives in the rainforest, animals like tamarins, chameleons and lemars. Everybody has enjoyed doing this lesson and we are really exited to see how everybody’s will turn out to look like.

3D maps of South America!

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been really busy creating a 3D map of South America! We started by spreading salt dough on to a piece of cardboard in the shape of South America. We had to leave it for a few days to harden, but as soon as it was ready we painted each country. The final stage was to create flags for each of the countries. It was a huge team effort and I’m sure you will agree they look great! Can you spot the flag for Uruguay?

Science/Theme

During the last three weeks 5SB have been working on Planet Presentations. Each group had to select a planet and research it. We then practised presenting our information and one afternoon we went down to 5MT to show them. Everybody did very well and 6MT enjoyed asking questions and giving us positive feedback.
