Maths Week in Year One

This week we have been celebrating Maths Week by completing Maths Trails and opening our own shops!

Looking at the Weather

LB1 have been looking at the weather throughout the year and today we made bar graphs to show how the temperature changed throughout the year. We found that December was the coldest but, unsurprisingly, the last few months have been much hotter.

A time for maths?

In maths we were estimating and timing  how long it took  us to do different  activities. such as sharpening a pencil, doing 12 star jumps or taking our shoes and putting them on again. Some of our estimations were close but some were a long way off! It was challenging but fun!

When is LATER?

In maths we were doing one hour later and we drew pictures of  what we would be doing later in the day.  Later is what you might do in the evening or the next day, for example if it’s twelve o’clock and you add an hour on it would be one o’clock.  Some of us were working out when TV programmes finished from their start times.

Sharing equally

We are applying our knowledge of half and quarter to quantities of objects.

Fractious fractions!

Here we are working together to solve problems about halving and quartering shapes.  Some of us were even recognising equivalent fractions even though we didn’t know we were!  Why not have a go at home by sharing pizza or cake into equal parts?  IMG_1266[1]

Number Sandwiches!

In Year 6, we tackled a tricky ‘Number Sandwiches’ investigation!

We started on Number Sandwich 3, in which we had to arrange the numbers 1 – 3 in number sandwiches. The numbers had to have an amount of numbers between them that were equal to their value. For example, in between two 1’s there had to be one number and in between two 2’s there had to be two numbers!IMG_4697

We found that the solution for Number Sandwich 3 was 312132.

After much perseverance, we discovered that Number Sandwiches 5 and 6 were impossible!

However, Number Sandwiches 4 and 7 can be done – can you find the solution?

If you can, please bring it in to show Mr Witcomb!

I can’t but we can …

How lovely to see Year 6 teaching Year 4 a different approach to their maths learning this week. Teamwork and collaboration showing how you succeed by helping others.

Meet the Teachers!

In Maths this week, Year 6 pupils did an amazing job of teaching column subtraction through the CPA approach to a lucky selection of pupils in Year 4! They started with the concrete approach, which is a method that includes the manipulation of physical resources. They used the resources to show their students how we exchange tens for ones, before moving on to the pictorial approach whereby we use pictures and diagrams to represent numbers.

Finally, when the teachers thought their pupils were ready, we moved on to the abstract approach where we practised column subtraction with exchanging. The whole lesson was very successful and was thoroughly enjoyed by every pupil taking part. We definitely have some future teachers in Year 6!

Guacamole! Get your guacamole!

Today we travelled back in time 500 years as we held an Aztec market. Developing our trading skills, we got to practice lots of maths as we thought about which products to put special offers on. And it wasn’t long before we got into our roles as market traders as we also learnt lots about the different foods the Aztecs ate.
