Science work shop

On Tuesday 2nd February Luke and Jay attended a science workshop. Dr Watson came in to teach us about electricity. First she taught us about static electricity and we did an experiment. We rubbed a balloon on our hair and we then got some paper circles to stick to the balloon, all on their own!

Next we investigated how a potato and a lemon can become a battery to light up an LED bulb, it was excellent!

After that we we investigated switches and materials that could conduct electricity and those that can’t!

Luke said: “It was good, I like investigating the materials the best”

Jay said “I had lots of fun because we did lots of practical experiments”

Exploring Fractions

This week we’ve been learning about fractions. On Wednesday we were given a collection of objects which we had to find three-quarters of. The four counters and the square of paper were simple enough but then we had to start to think… Surely Dr Fishwick didn’t expect us to cut up a 20p piece?

We found lots of different ways of making three-quarters, sometimes we even had different ways of dividing up the same objects.

Tree Planting

We had an awesome time helping to plant 1000 trees in Lickey Woods.

We walked to the Lickey Hills where we worked with ‘Birmingham Trees for Life’ and the Lickey Rangers. We were shown how to use a spade properly and they showed us how to plant and protect the baby trees. It was really muddy too!

Coding Spirolaterals

This week we returned to exploring spirolaterals – patterns formed by repeating simple mathematical rules. The first time we looked at these patterns we worked with pencil and paper. This time we used our understanding of coding to program a computer character to do the drawing for us…

Fractions posters

Today in maths we made fraction posters to show Our learning. These will go on our working wall to help us this year.

Poetry

Through out the past week or two in literacy we have been planning our poetry. We have been looking at using figurative language in our writing. Including: hyperbole, oxymoron, simile, personification, metaphor and alliteration.
