Unit 5 Overview

In English, we will be studying I Was a Rat! by I Was a Rat!. Through this text, the children will explore the features of diary writing and think carefully about different character roles. They will then have the opportunity to write their own diary entries from the perspective of the main character, helping them to develop their understanding of voice and viewpoint in a fun and creative way.

In Maths, we have recently finished our work on mass and capacity and are now moving on to the next stage of fractions. After this, we will begin learning about money, before moving on to time as we head further into the summer term. Children are encouraged to use Times Tables Rock Stars regularly at home to help build confidence with their multiplication and division facts. Maths homework is set on Wednesday and is due the following Monday.

In Science, we have started an exciting new topic on forces and magnets. The children will learn about Newtons and the laws of gravity, as well as take part in practical investigations to explore how magnets work.

In History, we are beginning our new topic on the Ancient Egyptians, where we will explore what life was like and compare it to life in Ancient Britain.

In Design and Technology (DT), our focus is healthy eating and nutrition. The children will learn about food hygiene and explore the Eatwell Plate to understand what makes a balanced diet. They will also have the chance to make their own healthy snacks, including fruit kebabs, fruit salads and smoothies.

We are also continuing our ECO Warriors work, encouraging the children to think about how they can help care for the environment in their everyday lives.

In PE, we will be focusing on dance and athletics, helping the children to build confidence, coordination and overall fitness. Please ensure PE kits are worn on PE days (Monday and Tuesday). For outdoor PE you may wish your child to have a plain navy tracksuit for the day. Please send your child to school in their kit on their PE day, see the School Uniform webpage for more information.  Please make sure all earrings are removed or covered with tape before school on PE days.

Spellings are tested every Monday, and children are encouraged to read at home at least three times a week to support their learning across the curriculum.
