For the Summer 1 Half Term, in history, we will be finding out about the legacy left by two inspirational women, Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. Through exploration of artefacts we will discover how the work of these significant women affected the health and welfare of soldiers during the Crimean War and how Florence Nightingale changed the role of nursing in hospitals. In English we continue with the theme of strong females with a fractured fairy tale, ‘Rapunzel’ by Bethan Woollvin. Golden-haired Rapunzel takes charge of her own destiny in this bold and witty tale that lacks a prince! We will be writing character descriptions and diary entries.
In other curriculum areas we are finding halves and quarters, exploring money and telling the time in maths; in art we will be exploring sculpture and landscape art introducing the work of Andy Goldsworthy and in science we will learn about a variety of common plants, name the main parts and describe their functions. We will be using technology to collect and organise data and continue developing our sending and receiving balls in P.E.
Spellings will posted on Monday evening to practice at home before a 'spelling quiz' on the following Monday. Current spellings can be found online on the link to the right. Maths fluency questions are likewise set on Wednesday and due back by the following Monday. We also strongly encourage the children to read at least three times a week at home.
Please make sure you have your PE or Forest School kits in school for our outdoor and sporting activities: 1MK have outdoor PE on Thursday; 1HB on Friday. Forest School and PE alternate on a Monday - please see this calendar to identify whether your child's class is doing PE or Forest School each week. Please send your child to school in their kit on their PE / Forest School day - all PE lessons will be outdoors (weather permitting) and you may wish to consider your child having a tracksuit for the day. More information about Forest School can be found on our curriculum web page. Please make sure all earrings are removed or covered with tape before school on PE days.
